Genres: rock, country, blues, funk, and soul

Joyce’s Music Background

Meet Joyce.  She currently performs as a solo artist covering hits from the 60s to today in the genres of classic rock, country, blues, soul and funk.   She also plays bass and sings in a five-piece funk and soul band.  She is a a United States Air Force veteran who grew up in Ohio and began playing guitar at the age of 4, but switched to taking piano lessons from ages 5 to 17, and then in her 20s, to bass guitar, which became her main instrument.

She can sing lead vocals over bass lines that are counter to melody lines.  Her musical influences include her dad Delmer “Duke” Sampson, a talented multi-instrumentalist and singer who played live on West Virginia radio and was asked by then up and coming country artist and songwriter Tom T. Hall to be the lead guitar player in his band.  Joyce’s wide musical influences range from blues legends Elmore James, Muddy Waters, James Cotton, the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, and numerous country legends such as Waylon Jennings, George Jones, Buck Owens, and both Hanks.

She has also been influenced by rap music, and she can rap, so that comes into her songwriting.  She has also been honored to play with some of her rock music’s greats including Steven Tyler, Barry Goudreau, and Paul Riddle.  If you’re interested in contacting Joyce to perform at your venue or event, click here.

When it all began

Joyce Sampson is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.   She has been playing music since childhood and has toured extensively as a bass player and backing vocalist in original bands and in cover bands that played for the Armed Forces Entertainment Group.

In 2019, she began songwriting for artists, and within two years, her hard work and talent led to two cuts and releases: “If Heaven was a House” by award-winning and Billboard-topping country and bluegrass artist, Kristy Cox (Billy Blue Records label), and “Get Out” by independent Canadian country artist Tianna Woods.  In September 2023, she won the “Co-Write Delight” Lyric Contest sponsored by American Songwriter Magazine

In 2022, a lyric line Joyce wrote was chosen by artist Alex Boyé to be part of his Suicide Prevention Anthem “If You Leave Now.”
